The H100 is a great GPU. It is also one of the easiest ways to overspend if your workload does not actually need it.
Why Everyone Wants the H100
It is the GPU everyone recognizes. It sounds premium, it benchmarks well, and it feels like the safe choice. But premium hardware is only worth paying for when your workload can use what makes it premium.
When an H100 Makes Sense
- Training or serving very large models that need 80GB VRAM and strong throughput
- Heavy multi-user inference where latency matters
- Production workloads where faster completion materially changes cost or revenue
When It Usually Does Not
- LoRA or QLoRA fine-tuning on smaller models
- Early-stage experiments and notebook work
- Inference on models that fit comfortably on a 4090 or A100
- Anything where your bottleneck is data loading, not GPU throughput
A Better Shortcut
| If your goal is... | Start with... | Upgrade only if... |
|---|---|---|
| Notebook experiments, small fine-tunes | RTX 4090 | You run out of VRAM or training time is unacceptable |
| Larger fine-tunes, heavier inference | A100 80GB | You need more throughput or enterprise-grade scale |
| Very large models, serious production workloads | H100 | You already know why you need it |
The Fastest Sanity Check
Before you rent an H100, answer these three questions:
- Does my model actually need 80GB VRAM?
- Will a faster GPU reduce total job cost enough to justify the rate difference?
- Am I optimizing for production throughput, or am I still experimenting?
The Honest Rule
If you have to ask whether you need an H100, you probably do not need to start there. Start with the cheapest GPU that fits your workload, then move up once you hit a real bottleneck.
